[Personality]
"You want me to express myself? Leave me alone!"
Mai is the gloomy, apathetic daughter of a Fire Nation nobleman in the World of Avatar. Perpetually bored and difficult to please, she is notorious among peers for being a Negative Nancy. She is so accustomed to self-restraint that she hardly knows how to display anything other than a straight-faced calm behavior, but her unhappiness is apparent enough to deduce immensely stifled frustrations. The way she avoids expressing herself and addressing her discontent earns her the description of "just a big blah" in the famous "Beach" episode of Avatar.
Her restrained personality is essentially a product of her upper-class upbringing. She makes it clear when reviewing her past that as long as she was well-behaved while her father pursued his political agenda, she could have anything she wanted. This did not lead to an exciting or uplifting childhood, but it is the way her world was shaped. This mentality is ingrained enough to become part of her comfort zone, and she just about lashes out when her Fire Nation friends prod her to open up. Mai is not interested in delving into deep communication with others; rather, as complex as she may be, she is okay with keeping everything on a superficial level because that is safe and easy.
This isn't to say that she is anti-social. On the contrary, Mai does willingly surround herself with other people. For example, attending a party (like she does in the "Beach" episode) might shake things up for her otherwise dreary life. Her restlessness does not come from a distaste for people, but rather a lack of anything to do. While she is not the easiest person to talk to, Mai will take a chance to be entertained.
That said, there are a few things that do honestly bring her joy, even if she has difficulty expressing it. The most notable is her relationship with Prince Zuko of the Fire Nation. They shared a mutual childhood crush before his exile, and she is quick to welcome him back when she, Azula, and Ty Lee take him and his Uncle Iroh back to the Fire Nation. Mai all but immerses herself back into his life when he returns, claiming ever-so-lovingly, "I don't hate you." He is also the subject of her outward emotional discontent after he breaks up with her in a letter when she tells him, "You could have at least looked me in the eye when you ripped out my heart." Other things that bring her some milder joy are fruit tarts and ordering around servants, and her friendship with Ty Lee appears to be just as genuine.
One of the most notable traits to Mai, for all her apathy and moodiness, is her apparent fearlessness towards Princess Azula of the Fire Nation. She teams up with Azula and Ty Lee as part of the antagonizing trio to the series without a question, following her orders along the way until there is a conflict of interest. When the Fire Nation attempts to drill the wall of Ba Sing Se, Mai refuses to pursue Avatar Aang's friends as they stop the drilling on account of not wanting to dive into the "sludge juice" that would be involved. She states that Azula can lightningbend her all she wants, but that isn't enough for her to willingly get messy. More significant is the incident when Azula attempts to stop Zuko, Sokka, Suki, and Hakoda from escaping Boiling Rock. Despite previously arguing with Zuko, Mai takes it upon herself to aid their escape by taking down the prison guards. This leads to a face-off with Azula in which she explains, "I guess you just don't know people as well as you think you do. You miscalculated - I love Zuko more than I fear you," thereby betraying both Azula and the Fire Nation.
[Abilities]
Mai is a nonbender among benders, but she can hold her own. She is typically armed with throwing weapons, particularly knives, darts, and sai. She has excellent aim, throws precise to the point of pinning her enemies to surfaces by their clothes. Mai is fast, quick-thinking and dexterous, evidenced by the way she successfully takes down many Boiling Rock prison guards at once. On the other hand, her restlessness and apathy can prevent her from getting a task done, so she may not be the most reliable ally.

[Sample post]
[First Person]
1. If you were to describe yourself in one sentence, what would that be?
Bored. [ A pause is meant to make her reassess her incomplete sentence, and she does so with a sigh. ] I'm bored.
2. You are forced onto the dance floor and you MUST dance or the most important person or thing will be destroyed. What do you end up dancing and to what music?
No one is forcing me to dance to anything. I don't dance. The "most important person or thing" can take care of itself.
3. There is a cake in the rain. What do you do?
Leave it there? I'm not going to eat soggy bread, that's disgusting. Whoever's in charge of cleaning the streets should take care of it.
4. You see a bloody knife on the floor. What do you do or think?
Who just leaves bloody knives laying around?
5. Someone is trying to rob you! What do you do?
I wouldn't let them.
6. What disgusts you the most?
Bright colors make me want to vomit.
[Third Person]
"Dear Mai, I'm sorry that you have to find out this way, but I'm leaving."
A scroll lay open on her bed as Mai was getting ready for the day. She didn't want to think about what it said anymore, let alone recount the number of times she scrutinized the words for a hint of hope that Zuko was playing a sick joke. But neither of them would have found something like this funny, and she knew that. As long, nimble fingers twisted dark tendrils into her usual hairstyle, the inked characters nevertheless permeated her mind, because it hit harder than it should have. It hurt more than she would have ever wanted. There was a reason she kept her feelings to herself, and this one exception proved that she'd been right to do so.
She was to visit her uncle's prison at Boiling Rock that day. It was not a trip she was particularly looking forward to, but it would give her a place to be and something to do. A fresh batch of prisoners were on their way. That didn't affect her directly, but maybe the place would be busy enough where she could distract herself.
Yeah, right.
The thought came with a twitch and a grimace, an accidental tug on her hair where she screwed up a bun. She let her hair fall down past her shoulders before starting over. This time, she didn't think. Her chest hurt, but another thought about the jerk wasn't going to happen. She deftly assembled her hair in symmetric buns and evened out the loose locks. It took ten minutes to thereon fully arm her body with knives and darts beneath her clothes.
Another glance at her bed, and she snatched up the letter with a huff. Her eyes scanned it one last time before she rolled it neatly and tucked it into her robes. If there was even the slightest chance that she was going to see Zuko on any given day (meaning, as long as he was alive), she wasn't going to miss the opportunity to throw his words in his face.
[Why do you want to play this character in Somarium?] I like that Somarium is open-ended enough to take a character in basically any direction, and I think it'll provide me with a lot of opportunities to plug Mai into situations she doesn't normally address.
[Which rule was your favorite and why?] I like that the process for determining OOCness isn't completely subjective, and in fact is set up in a way to encourage players to grow and improve.
[Where did you hear about Somarium?] I heard about you guys from a few plurkers I know!
[Any questions?] Nope!
